Color of the Month
Indian Yellow
A very warm yellow with more orange in it than cadmium yellow. Think of autumn and you get the feeling that Indian yellow will give your painting. I use it when I want an intense highlight on a red object or to mix into warm red to create a lighter value - a light red instead of pink. It is also a good base when you're painting gold jewelry or any other metal object with a gold tone. It is a color you might want to invite to your palette.
Tool of the Month
Reference Library
Yours can be as large or as small as you want. What it might include is books, magazine articles, clipped photos, postcards... What it should be is organized. If you have hundreds of photos and scores of magazines but you cannot find that photo of a boat - all you really have is clutter.
Take an hour or so at a time, while you're watching TV or goofing off, and put things into categories. Clip articles and images you want to save from magazines and recycle the rest. It doesn't have to be fancy. Large envelops can be had for free from shipping companies. Label them in your categories and fill them as you clip. Soon you will have reference material that you can actually find and use!
Uncertainty Principle
It is usually the middle stage of the painting when you start to hate it. You are not sure if it will turn out. You wonder if you want to keep working on it.
We normally begin with such a positive attitude and start the painting with a happy heart. Where did it go? When you get bogged down you begin to wonder if the painting will ever turn out . Can you get to the finished product you envisioned in your head? You feel as if nothing seems to be working.
Have faith! Just as cake batter looks nothing like the finished product, your painting must go through a stage where it does not seem to resemble the final product. The best remedy is to just keep plugging away. Evaluate your colors and your values. Are your shapes right? Are your shadows and highlights in place? Do your edges need more variety? Fix each of these items and when your are finished your painting will be as well or at least closer to it. Don't give up! You are closer to the finish line then you might think! .
